Should schoolchildren take holidays in term-time?

When I was a nipper, a family holiday coinciding with the school term was a very rare event. Nowadays it seems commonplace. So much so that the British Government wants to fine parents a £100 truancy notice for taking their children out of school without permission.

For once, I agree with the government. One of the responsibilities of parenthood is ensuring their children receive a good education. Another is to take on the extra financial burden that children bring with them. If this means paying the higher cost of travel during the school holidays then so be it.

What does everyone else think?

  • Yeah, I quite agree with this too.

The one thing that did grate about this, though, was that one lady (a teacher, or an education related minister - I forget) was interviewed by the BBC, and made the lovely sweeping statement that "it is in childrens interests to be educated, and that means being in school".

It doesn't, necessarily. What about Home Education?

Anyway, it's besides the point. There ought to be some recognition of the fact that taking children away from education will result in them not learning anything.

Maybe it should be down to the parents to ensure that they catch up, or that they cover things while they're away? The same would happen if the child was in hospital, or away for some other reason.

It seems pretty reasonable to me.

However, I would suggest that the OFT conducts an investigation into the ridiculous price hike of holidays during the school summer holidays. Certainly, a reasonable proportion of this is due to the fact that.. well, it's the summer, but I have trouble believing that none of it is designed to cash in on families taking holidays when the children are off school.
  • I think it should be up to the parent How to educate thier children. As long as the childs education dose not suffer. I personally believe my time of travel was just as valuable as my time in college. The family should be held responsible for thier childs education not thier attendence in formal education. The tests will tell... i guess

It is. Parents are allowed to home educate, for example. However, if a child is placed in school, shouldn't the child attend the course to derive the intended benefit?

      And it's "their", btw.
